To import to Vietnam, there are 2 crucial documents that you’ll need to obtain from the Department of Planning and Investment (DPI):
- Investment license
- Business registration certificate
Do note that the process of getting these 2 documents can take up to 3 months, hence it’s important to complete the registration promptly.
Furthermore, if you’re planning to sell your goods directly to consumers in Vietnam, you’re also required to register for a trading license. This process can take up to 6 – 12 weeks to obtain and you can apply for it after the incorporation of your business.
Duties and Taxes for Shipments from the united states to Vietnam
No taxes will be levied on goods exported from the United States.
However, most goods imported to Vietnam are subject to duty. The import tax rates differ according to the type of goods – consumer goods are typically subject to higher tax rates as compared to machinery and raw materials used in production.
The import tax is categorized into 3 different schemes:

- Special preferential tax rates
- Ordinary tax rates
In addition to import duty, goods brought into Vietnam are also subject to value-added tax (VAT).
