FAQs About FCL Shipping
What Is FCL Shipping?
FCL, or “Full Container Load,” is a sea freight service where a single shipper leases the exclusive use of a standard metal shipping container (typically 20ft or 40ft). The container is loaded with only that shipper’s goods and is sealed at the origin. This sealed unit is then transported to the destination, providing a secure and private method for moving cargo. The shipper pays a flat rate for the entire container, regardless of how full it is.
What Is The Difference Between FCL And LCL?
The primary difference lies in how container space is used. With FCL (Full Container Load), your cargo is the sole occupant of the container. In contrast, with LCL (Less than Container Load), your cargo is combined with shipments from multiple other customers to fill a single shared container. This means FCL shipments are handled less (as they aren’t consolidated), while LCL shipments must be sorted and grouped at a warehouse before departure and separated again upon arrival.
Is It Cheaper To Ship LCL Or FCL?
The cheaper option depends entirely on your shipment’s volume. LCL is cheaper for smaller shipments because you only pay for the specific volume (measured in cubic meters) or weight your cargo occupies. FCL becomes cheaper for larger shipments once your cargo volume reaches a certain threshold (often around 15 cubic meters). At that point, the flat rate for an entire FCL container provides a lower cost per cubic meter than paying the LCL rate for the same volume.
What Is FCL And LTL?
FCL and LTL are concepts from two different modes of transportation. FCL (Full Container Load) is exclusively an ocean freight term for sea shipping. LTL (Less than Truckload) is a land freight term used for domestic shipping via truck. While they are analogous—both describe moving a shipment that doesn’t fill the entire transport unit—FCL relates to ocean containers, and LTL relates to space on a semi-trailer truck.
