Commonly Shipped Items From USA To Indonesia

There is a wide range of goods and parcels being shipped from the United States to Indonesia. Some common items include:

  • Electronic equipment
  • Machinery and industrial parts
  • Chemicals and pharmaceuticals
  • Vehicles and automotive parts
  • Textiles and apparel
  • Agricultural products
  • Consumer goods and electronics
  • Medical equipment and supplies
  • Construction materials
  • Furniture and home goods

Shipping Methods Available

When shipping goods from the US to Indonesia, there are two primary modes of transportation: air and sea freight. Additionally, land transportation via trucking may be employed for seamless door-to-door delivery.

SEA FREIGHT

Goods transported via sea freight are delivered on a cargo vessel. As these vessels are larger than air carriers, they are able to move bigger containers and pallets. Thus, if you are shipping bulky goods from the US to Indonesia, sea freight might be a better option for you.

Furthermore, it is a cheaper alternative to air freight, though it generally takes a longer time to ship.

AIR FREIGHT

Air freight is the shipment of goods via an air carrier. It is faster than sea freight, making it ideal for transporting time-sensitive goods and emergency supplies. In addition, this shipment mode is commonly used for high-value consumer goods as it has a higher level of security as compared to sea freight.

While faster, air freight is, unfortunately, usually significantly more costly than shipping by sea.

FCL SHIPPING

Full container load (FCL) is a shipment mode whereby a cargo container is owned by a single exporter. While it is ideal for larger shipments, it is not necessary to fully load the container in order to opt for this method.

This is a cost-effective option if you plan to transport items that have a volume of 13 CBM and above. It also has a faster transit time than LCL and your cargo is less prone to damage or contamination from other products in the container.

LCL SHIPPING

Less than container load (LCL) refers to transporting products in a container that is shared with other exporters. This is often the preferred method if you are unable to fill an entire container on your own. The general rule is to use LCL for parcels that are between 2 to 13 cubic meters (CBM).

This method of shipping is typically more affordable as the cost of the container is shared, reducing the cost of shipment.

Can You Send Used Clothes To Indonesia?

In 2015, Indonesia banned the import of secondhand clothing and footwear over concerns about hygiene, as well as to protect the local textile industry. While the lack of penalties stipulated for its violation has rendered the ban ineffective, the Indonesia Trade Ministry has stepped up scrutiny over the years. It has, in some regions, including Mojokerto, East Java, and Pekanbaru, Riau, confiscated and destroyed about 20 billion rupiah worth of imported used clothing.

What Are The Shipping Options To Indonesia?

Shipping to Indonesia can be done via air freight or sea freight:

  • Air Freight: Faster (typically 1-7 business days depending on the service), but more expensive. Ideal for small, urgent, or high-value items. Common carriers include FedEx, UPS, DHL, and USPS (international services).
  • Sea Freight: Cheaper but slower (2-6 weeks or more), best for large or bulky shipments. Options include Full Container Load (FCL) for large volumes or Less than Container Load (LCL) for smaller shipments sharing container space.

What Documents Are Required When Shipping To Indonesia?

A non-exhaustive list of the important documents you will need to submit are as follows:
  • Commercial Invoice: Lists the item’s description, value, and quantity.
  • Packing List: Details the contents and packaging.
  • Bill of Lading/Airway Bill: Proof of shipment from the carrier.
  • Certificate of Origin: May be required for certain goods.
  • Customs Declaration: Included with courier shipments.
  • For personal effects, you might need a passport copy or visa. Ensure accuracy to avoid delays.

Specialized cargo, like dangerous goods, may require additional documents like the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). It is advisable for you to each out to a professional freight forwarder like Express Freight Management to help get your documents in order.
